Are you Repairing or Preparing? Are you Repairing or Preparing?

Monday, August 10, 2009 | Comments (0) تعليقات | Permalink

Are you Repairing or Preparing?  It is a simple question, but one that is not normally asked.  If you are Repairing, you are playing catch up.  Doing things you should have Prepared for, but you didn't and now you have to play catch up.

Were you surprised by a situation or an event that you were not Prepared for and now you have to spend precious time Repairing the damage?

Are you Repairing because you did not properly Prepare?

Many people get in the Repairing mode of operating and they are never able to catch up.  As we discussed a couple of weeks ago, you can get in the Repairing mode, feel like you never can catch up and then you end up getting Too Hot – burning out.

No matter how good a leader you are, there will be problems, and you will have to Repair things from time to time.  However, if you are Repairing, you must look at the current situation and make sure it does not happen again.  Mistakes the first time are forgivable, however mistakes the second time are not.

So, leaders are Preparers.  They are Preparing their teams for the future, and they are Preparing themselves for the future. They are making preparations for a Plan B and Plan C.  Leaders always can answer the question,“What is the worst case scenario?" and leaders have a plan to handle that worst case scenario.  As a leader, you should never be surprised of the situation – even if there is a low probability of it happening.

Again, be Prepared and Prepare your teams.  As you are developing young leaders underneath you, discuss with them possibilities and discuss with them scenarios.  These strategy sessions are a great time to teach and train young leaders on how to always be Prepared.

Lead On!

Making a Decision vs. Managing a Decision Making a Decision vs. Managing a Decision

Tuesday, August 04, 2009 | Comments (0) تعليقات | Permalink

"Making a decision is overrated.  Managing a decision is under rated." (John C. Maxwell)

Anyone can make a decision, but true leadership occurs when you manage a decision into a success.  So, simply put, the secret to success is not being the decision maker, it is being the leader that make the decision happen.

I have 2 questions for you:

1.  Who has made a New Year’s Resolution?  These are the personal or business related goals that you make at the end of a new calendar year to improve yourself or your situation.

2.  Ok, now the tough question:  Who has broken a New Year’s Resolution?

Did you know that 85% of the New Year’s resolutions are broken in the first two weeks?

Ok, now here is another question, for all the people that have made a New Year’s resolution and broke it – Was the New Year’s Resolution a good decision?  Just based solely on a decision, was what you wanted to do or change a good thing or a good decision?

I suspect that most of the New Year’s resolutions are good decisions, however there is a high probability that each year these resolutions will not be kept – Why?

One of my favorite leadership phases is:  YOU CAN NOT KEEP DOING THE SAME THING AND EXPECT A DIFFERENT OUTCOME.

Let me give you a personal story to display this point.  In 2004 and 2005, I weighted 195 lbs.  Now, at 5’8” that is not the weight I wanted to weigh.  For the previous five or six years, I would make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight.  However, each year not only would I not lose any weight by the end of the year, I would have added 3 to 4 pounds on top of my weight.  So instead of improving, I was going backwards.

So, each year, the decision to lose weight was a good one, because I was over weight for my height and it was not healthy.  However, I never did anything to manage this decision.  I was caught DOING THE SAME THING, BUT EXPECTING A DIFFERENT RESULT - and a different result will not happen.

On December 26th, 2005,  I made the same decision that I had made the previous five years, but this time I decided something had to change.  So, I took out a piece of paper and wrote down all of the things I needed to do or change to produce a different outcome – to lose weight.  So that day, before New Year’s Day I implemented a personal project management plan to lose weight.  It included taking one day at a time; stop eating sweets; stop drinking alcohol and begin to run at least three times a week.  So in order to get a different outcome, I could not keep doing the same things.

Well the end of that story is that after three years, I am still working that same project management plan – and I have lost 25 pounds and I am much healthier.

This principle of managing a decision applies in everything we do.  When you have made a decision,

1.  Take 2 steps back – What is the problem?

2.  Ask your Leader - What is the problem?

3.  Ask your Co-Worker - What is the problem?

4.  Ask the Customer - What is the problem?

5.  Ask the lowest person on the chain what the problem is and where it was caused.

6.  Develop a Project Plan

7.  Communicate the Objectives

8.  Get Buy in from everyone involved

9.  Begin Managing the new decisions

10.   Go back to #1

Lead On!
